COLLEGE ATHLETICS PRESENTATION FROM HARPER
We had over 70 Grove Junior High students attend the College Athletics Presentation by Harper College’s Athletic Director Doug Spiwak and former college athlete, Brad Reibel (who is now Harper College’s Sports Communication Assistant.)
The presenters spoke to students about the following topics:
– Importance of Grades and GPA- starting now in middle school
– Importance of character, integrity, and who you present yourself to be daily to people and ONLINE.
– Persistence pays off
– Doug shared his pathway to becoming an athletic director and traveling with various sports teams throughout his career.
– He Linked how MANY careers can be connected to working in sports, whether or not you end up as a college or professional athlete. Presenters gave specific examples of paths they both took in sports to get where they are – and get paid to watch sports for a living! (I encouraged students to utilize their Career Cruising accounts to find future careers in regards to having a back up plan!)
– Brad reinforced study habits, attending classes, and asking for help NOW. He emphasized to students to ask teachers and get help from resources available at school.
– Discussed how to obtain a scholarship, the Harper Promise, and how you can not be eligible for scholarships.
– In some presentations, we even discussed the movie Rudy, and how even if you struggle in school, you can still achieve greatness!
– Explained what a GPA was and broke down what an A – B – C – D – F meant.
