Will Richardson Presentation Explores Modern Learning
How do you best prepare your child for jobs that may no longer exist in their future? Is it possible that in the not too distant future, a college degree could become obsolete? What conditions could possibly exist in current classrooms that actually prevent children from wanting to learn more, and how do we change them?
These are some of the questions Will Richardson asked during his presentation “Educating Modern Learners: Preparing Our Children for the Networked World,” to parents and guardians on the evening of November 17. Richardson explained how the traditional classroom is evolving, how the internet and online tools are changing how and when students learn today, and how to integrate the two.
His presentation included thought-provoking questions and discussion, including who students learn from, where they learn, how online tools are shaping the traditional curriculum, and even what college and beyond may mean to today’s student.
After the presentation, he held a question and answer session with attending parents and guardians, who asked several questions, such as: How do I know how much time online to give my child? How should math be taught in the modern day classroom? How do teachers help balance teaching the required curriculum while allowing students to really stay engaged in topics of interest?
“I think D59 is really leading the way in terms of modeling how schools and districts need to consider the challenges and opportunities of the modern learning world,” said Richardson. “They’re asking the right questions, taking the time to talk through the answers in meaningful, relevant ways, and thinking deeply about what classrooms need to become to best serve our kids for their futures. And having parents be a part of those conversations is an important part of that process.”
Dr. Art Fessler, Superintendent of Schools, participated in the discussion, answering questions more specifically about CCSD59’s dedication to helping students become passionate, lifelong learners.
If you missed Richardson’s excellent presentation, the good news is you can still see it on video. You will be amazed at how much you can learn in an hour and a half.
