7th Grade7th Grade

American Cities projects

Students will pick a group of 3-5 people to work on a presentation about the music and culture from an American city.  Project information can be found here.  The Project Grade Sheet is also attached.

Blues songs

Students will compose a 12-bar blues song on Hookpad (make sure it is 12 measures long, and there is only one chord per measure.  Change the key to D and use only I, IV and V chords).  Fill out the Google Doc and turn it in when your song is finished.  Make a copy so you can edit it!

“Hamilton” project

All students will complete a project based on the music from “Hamilton” the Musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda.  Students can choose to do this project on their own or in a small group of 2-4 people.   Read the project descriptions below and choose a project that includes some of the songs from the Musical.  Some projects will work better with a group than others!  Only a few groups/people can pick each project in each class, and once you choose you cannot change it, so choose carefully!!  Click this link to Google Drive to access the files and project information.

“star-spangled banner” re-write

With a group of 3-4 people, re-write the lyrics to the “Star-Spangled Banner” with updated and current slang or speech.  “Star-Spangled Banner” re-write

Ukulele playing assessments

Throughout the ukulele unit, there will be playing assessments for several songs and skills that we are learning in class.  Playing assessments are typically worth 40 points, (C scale playing assessment is 35) and use the Ukulele Performance Rubric.

ukulele tutorials

Ukulele tutorial videos are shared in Google Drive.  If you don’t have access to a video, tell Mrs. Winters and she will share it with you.  Videos can be helpful to watch in class or at home to get extra practice with the chords that we’ll be playing in class this year.

quizzes

Classes will be taking short quizzes to review the American Music and Ukulele material that is covered in class on socrative.  Some quizzes will be done individually and some will be in small teams of 2-3 students.  Most quizzes are 10-15 questions and 20-30 points each.

Listening activities

As we are learning about different genres and musical artists throughout American music history, classes will be listening to musical examples and answering questions, and completing activities related to the music.  All of the Listening Activities this year will be done on Nearpod and can be made up or re-done during lunch or study hall if you get a pass from Mrs. Winters.  Most Listening Activities are 10-15 points each.

Ancestry homework

7th Grade classes will have one “homework” assignment, to talk to someone in their family about your ancestry.  You will share with the class what you find out.  Try to find:

What country (countries) your family came from

Who in your family first came to America

When they came to America (approximately)

Who in your family was first born in America
